Liebe Freunde der Objektiv-Youngtimer,

ich möchte euch das

Pentax SMC 35-70mm f2.8-3.5

gerne vorstellen.

Gebaut wurde es von 1978 bis 1983. Es basierte auf einem Prototypen mit durchgängig f2.8, der jedoch nicht in die Produktion ging.
So wurde es zu einem Modell mit variablen Blendengrundwerten an beiden Enden des Zoombereiches.
Eine Besonderheit ist die Einring-Bedienung (Push-Pull- Zoom ).
Am kürzesten ist das Objektiv bei 70mm, um in den Weitwinkel zu kommen muss man das Objektiv ausziehen. Somit ist es bei 35mm am Längsten.

I would like to introduce you to the

Pentax SMC 35-70mm f2.8-3.5

via a full lens review.

It was built from 1978 to 1983. It was based on a prototype with f2.8 throughout, which however did not go into production.
So it became a model with variable aperture base values at both ends of the zoom range.
A special feature is the single-ring operation (push-pull-zoom ).
The lens is at its shortest at 70mm, to get the wide angle you have to extend the lens. This makes it the longest at 35mm.

Die geringste Länge hat es bei 70mm Brennweite, bei 35mm ist es am Längsten:

Das Objektiv ist sehr gut verarbeitet und für seine Größe gefühlt sehr schwer.
Die Kombination Sony mit L-Winkel und Objektiv fühlt sich relativ ausgewogen an, das Objektiv ist auch nicht zu groß.
Bei Auszug in den Weitwinkel wird es etwas kopflastiger, ist aber ebenfalls gut zu halten.

Generell ist die objektiveigene Nahdistanz von 1m der "Showstopper", es ist dann nur bedingt zu empfehlen, weil die Vielseitigkeit damit komplett fehlt.
Bei der Benutzung eines Helicoid -Adapters zur Adaption sieht das ganze schon viel besser aus.
Man kommt damit wirklich in den Nahbereich (bei 35mm bis kurz vor die Frontlinse, bei 70mm geschätzt 40-50cm) und es erweitert sich die Nutzbarkeit enorm.

The lens is very well made and feels very heavy for its size.
The combination of Sony with L-angle and lens feels relatively balanced, and the lens is not too big either.
When extended to wide angle, it becomes a little more top-heavy, but is also easy to hold.

In general, the lens' own close distance of 1m is the "showstopper", and it is only recommended to a limited extent because it completely lacks versatility.
When using a Helicoid-Adapter for adaptation, the whole thing looks much better.
This really allows you to get up close (at 35mm up to just in front of the front lens, at 70mm an estimated 40-50cm) and the usability is expanded enormously.

Ich habe die letzten Wochen viel mit dem Objektiv fotografiert,
und, für mich durchaus überraschend, erweist es sich als sehr vielseitig und bereitet mir viel Spaß.

An Neujahr war bei uns fantastisches Wetter: herrlicher Sonnenschein und 15 Grad - gefühlt ein toller Frühlingstag!
Ich hatte das Pentax mit auf einem kleinen Spaziergang und wegen der bereits tiefstehenden Sonne konnte ich es "auf Herz und Nieren" testen,
auch was das Gegenlichtverhalten angeht.

Dabei erweist es sich als sehr gut für ein altes Zoom-Objektiv im Gegenlicht - sowohl bei Offenblende:

I've been taking a lot of photos with the lens in the last few weeks
and, quite surprisingly for me, it's proving to be very versatile and I'm having a lot of fun with it.

We had fantastic weather on New Year's Day: wonderful sunshine and 15 degrees - it felt like a great spring day!
I took the Pentax with me on a short walk and because the sun was already low, I was able to put it through its paces,
including when it came to backlighting.

It proves to be very good for an old zoom lens in backlight - both at open aperture:

... als auch deutlich abgeblendet, um Blendensterne zu bekommen (die übrigens mit ihren 14 relativ gut definierten Strahlen sehr schön sind!) - zu beachten ist auch die geringe Neigung zu Flares und Kontrastverlusten:

... as well as significantly stopped down in order to get aperture stars (which, by the way, are very nice with their 14 relatively well-defined rays!) - it should also be noted that there is a slight tendency to flares and loss of contrast:

Auch direkt gegen die tiefstehende Sonne (sie war so hell, dass man mit bloßem Auge nicht hinsehen konnte!), ergeben sich nur ein relativ geringer Kontrastverlust und nur wenige Flares (Bild 1 bei 35mm, Bild 2 bei 70mm):

Even directly against the low sun (it was so bright that you couldn't see with the naked eye!), there was only a relatively small loss of contrast and only a few flares (image 1 at 35mm, image 2 at 70mm):

Neben der guten Leistung gegen die Sonne erweist sich das Pentax auch als sehr scharf - sowohl bei Offenblende als auch abgeblendet gibt es nichts zu meckern.

Auch die Korrektur auf Farbfehler sieht in diesen Extremsituationen wirklich gut aus. Bei den Offenblendbildern etwas Bokeh-Fringing - aber nichts weltbewegendes.

In addition to the good performance against the sun, the Pentax also proves to be very sharp - there is nothing to complain about both when the aperture is wide open and stopped down.

The correction for color errors also looks really good in these extreme situations. Some bokeh fringing in the open-aperture images - but nothing earth-shattering.

Bei 70mm kann man mit dem Pentax-Zoom bei Offenblende auch schöne (Hunde-)Portraits machen -

das Bokeh ist für ein Zoom-Objektiv sehr ansehnlich und die Schärfe bei Offenblende passt:

At 70mm you can also take beautiful (dog) portraits with the Pentax zoom with the aperture open -

The bokeh is very impressive for a zoom lens and the sharpness at wide open aperture is good:

So ein 35-70mm-Zoom ist ein sehr schöner flexibler Brennweitenbereich als "Walkaround"-Linse -

und auch für Landschaften ist es bei allen Brennweiten bei f8 absolut randscharf:

And even for landscapes it is absolutely sharp at all focal lengths at f8:

Das Objektiv alleine ermöglicht ja nur eine Nahgrenze von 1m - dies ist sehr unflexibel.

Zum Glück besteht die Möglichkeit, bei der Adaption an die spiegellosen Systemkameras, einen Helicoid-Adapter zu verwenden, der wie ein flexibler Zwischenring ein Fokussieren in den Nahbereich ermöglicht.

Die folgenden Bilder zeigen, dass wohl nicht die optische Leistuingsfähigkeit, sondern andere technische Notwendigkeiten ausschlaggebend für die 1m-Grenze sind.

Denn auch im Nahbereich ist das Objektiv ab Offenblende sehr scharf:

The lens itself  only allows a close-up limit of 1m - this is very inflexible.

Fortunately, it is possible to use a helicoid adapter when adapting to mirrorless system cameras, which, like a flexible intermediate ring, enables focusing into the close range.

The following pictures show that it is probably not the optical performance, but other technical requirements that are decisive for the 1m limit.

Even at close range, the lens is very sharp when the aperture is open:

Auch abgeblendet (und hier auch noch voll gegen die Sonne) ist die Schärfeleistung sehr gut:

Also when stopped down (and here also fully against the sun), the sharpness is very good:

Optisch der auffälligste Fehler ist die deutliche Vignettierung bei 35mm -

hier bei Offenblende:

Visually, the most noticeable flaw is the clear vignetting at 35mm -

here with the aperture open:

Abgeblendet auf f5.6 ist diese schon deutlich gemildert  - und auch die Randbereiche profitieren vom Schärfezuwachs:

Stopped down to f5.6, this is significantly reduced - and the edge areas also benefit from the increase in sharpness:

Abgesehen von dieser Vignette ist die Bildleistung wirklich bei allen Brennweiten sehr gut für ein altes Zoom:

Bei Offenblende im Zentrum schon sehr gut, wird es über den kompletten Brennweitenbereich bei f8 randscharf - etwas, was man bei einigen Konkurrenten aus der gleichen Zeit nicht  findet.

Apart from this vignette, the image performance at all focal lengths is really very good for an old zoom:

Already very good in the center when the aperture is open, the edges are sharp across the entire focal length range at f8 - something you don't find in some competitors from the same time.

Ein weiteres wichtiges Kriterium ist die Verzeichnung.

Vor allem ältere Zoom-Objektive sind in dieser Hinsicht nur unzureichend korrigiert.

Aber das Pentax zeigt hier eine ordentliche Leistung.

Bei 35mm verzeichnet es sichtbar tonnenförmig, bei 50mm ist es verzeichnungsfrei und bei 70mm verzeichnet es in geringem Maß kissenförmig.

Da diese Verzeichnungen komplett ohne komplexe schnurrbartartige Elemente sind,

kann man sie in LR mittels der Verzerrungskorrektur komplett entfernen.

Hier die Verzeichnung bei 35mm. Bild 1 unkorrigiert, Bild 2 ist in LR mit dem Wert + 14 korrigiert:

Another important criterion is distortion.

Older zoom lenses in particular are only inadequately corrected in this regard.

But the Pentax shows decent performance here.

 At 35mm the distortion is visibly barrel-shaped, at 50mm it is distortion-free and at 70mm it is slightly cushion-shaped.

Since these distortions are completely devoid of complex mustache-like elements,

you can completely remove them in LR using the distortion correction.

Here is the distortion at 35mm. Image 1 is the uncorrected, image 2 is corrected in LR with the value + 14:

Bei 70mm wieder zuerst das unkorrigierte, daneben das mit -2 in LR korrigierte Bild:

Ein zu seiner Zeit mit Sicherheit zu den Spitzen-Objektiven gehörendes Zoom-Objektiv,

das auch heute noch sehr überzeugen kann und schöne Bildergebnisse liefert.

Gute zentrale Schärfe ab Offenblende, bei f8 bei allen Brennweiten randscharf.

Wenig auffällige Farbfehler- man muss chromatische Aberrationen mit Extremsituationen erzwingen.

Für ein Objektiv aus den 1980er-Jahren sehr gute Gegenlichtergebnisse. Kaum Flares und Kontrastverluste.

Auffällig ist die deutlich sichbare Vignettierung bei 35mm. Die anderen Brennweiten zeigen diese nicht.

Ein zu berücksichtigender Punkt ist die Verzeichnung. Bei 35mm ist diese sichtbar tonnenförmig, bei den anderen Brennweiten vernachlässigbar und heutzutage in der Nachbearbeitung komplett entfernbar.

Für die heute aufgerufenen Preise ist das wirklich ein No-Brainer und von mir eine klare Kaufempfehlung, wenn man ein Objektiv in diesem Brennweitenbereich sucht.

A zoom lens that was certainly one of the top lenses of its time,

which is still very convincing today and delivers beautiful image results.

Good central sharpness from open aperture, edge sharp at f8 at all focal lengths.

Little noticeable color errors - you have to force chromatic aberrations with extreme situations.

Very good backlight results for a lens from the 1980s. Hardly any flares or loss of contrast.

What is striking is the clearly visible vignetting at 35mm. The other focal lengths do not show this.

One point to consider is distortion. At 35mm this is visibly barrel-shaped, at the other focal lengths it is negligible and can now be completely removed in post-processing.

For the prices quoted today, this is really a no-brainer and a clear purchase recommendation from me if you are looking for a lens in this focal length range.
